What We Believe
If this is your first contact with our congregation, you probably have a few questions about our beliefs as a congregation. First and foremost, the goal our congregation is to act solely on the authority of God's word.
Our Sole Authority is the Bible
Our sole source of authority is that which is found only in the inspired Scripture. Therefore, we seek to be governed in all that we do by God's Holy Word. Since the Scriptures are sufficient for our every need (2 Timothy 3:16-17), the goal of our preaching and teaching is to teach only that which is commanded in the Bible.
We Are Christians Only
The division in the religious world today is far different from the unity enjoyed by the early Christians before traditionalism, sectarian practices and organizational names divided them. Believing such division to be contrary to the Scriptures, we have no denominational organization. Following the teachings of Christ and His apostles, that we find in His inspired word, individually we are known only as Christians.
Salvation
What must I do to be saved? This is a common question that is asked. The scriptures tell us that eternal salvation is the result of God's grace which is obtained by faith (Ephesians 2:8). Faith that moves God to bestow His grace is a faith which is evidenced by action (James 2:14-26). This kind of faith moves one to have a heart that yields to God's wishes. Such an attitude results in actions that are obedient to God's commandments. God requires a few things to obtain salvation:
- God requires us to hear the Word of God, in order to obtain faith (Romans 10:17).
- He requires us to believe in the Gospel, because without Faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6).
- He requires the repentance of sins, or the turning away from a sinful lifestyle (Acts 17:30).
- He requires those seeking salvation to be willing to acknowledge Jesus Christ, before men (Matthew 10:32-33) and to be immersed in water of baptism for the remission of sins. (Acts 2:38, 22:16).
- We must also remain faithful in this life, in order to receive the crown of life (Revelation 2:10).
Worship
As a congregation, we worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). We worship God through the five acts of worship that are provided within His inspired word:
- We Teach/Preach the Word of God, in order to grow stronger in Christ and overcome false teaching (Matthew 28:19-20; 2 Timothy 4:1-5).
- We sing praises to God in song, as we are commanded, by making “melody within our hearts” (Colossians 3:16; Ephesians 5:19).
- We lift prayers to God, as a part of our public worship and private devotion. There are numerous examples and precepts regarding prayer in the New Testament (1 Timothy 2:1-2; Philippians 4:6;1 Thessalonians 5:17).
- Each first day of the week, we partake of the Lord’s supper, as commanded in Acts 20:7, to bring to our remembrance the sacrifice of the body and blood of Jesus Christ on the cross for our sins (Matthew 26:26-29). We partake of the unleavened bread, which represents Christ’s broken body, and drink of grape juice to represent the shedding of His blood upon that cross, all in remembrance of Him.
- We also contribute financially, each first day of the week, to support the work of Christ’s Church, as we are commanded in 1 Corinthians 16:2. We give cheerfully, and not begrudgingly, to reflect the godly characteristic of sacrifice. Visitors will not be expected to give.
We are a group of God's people who strive to fulfill the mission that He has given us, through the works we complete individually and collectively. We believe in educating ourselves in the Word, so that we might better evangelize to other and edify one another. Our guide for this is Ephesians 4:12, “equipping of the saints (education), for the work of ministry (evangelism) for the edifying of the body of Christ (edification).”
