“How Is Your Worship Service Different?”
Someone may ask, “How is your worship different from other churches in the area?”
We do not compare our faith and practices to what any other group may or may not do. We are simply trying to follow God’s Word as the standard for what we believe and how we serve our Creator.
When you visit one of our Sunday worship services, you can expect to find a simple worship service that follows that pattern established by the apostles of Jesus in the New Testament. We come together on every Lord’s Day (Acts 20:7, Revelation 1:10), which is Sunday, to worship God by . . .
Praying: Faithful men in our congregation lead us in prayer (1 Timothy 2:1-8).
Singing: We sing together songs of praise to God without musical instruments (Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16). The words and music are available in songbooks and project on screen for those who may be unfamiliar with the songs. Visitors may sing along, or simply listen as we worship.
Taking Communion: Every Sunday, our members honor Christ’s death by eating the Lord’s Supper in a memorial. It consists of thanksgiving prayers for our Lord’s sacrifice, eating unleavened bread, and drinking fruit of the vine (Acts 20:7). As each person receives the bread or communion cup, each person is encouraged to remember the Christ’s great gift and reflect on our faithful service to him!
Preaching: For about 30 minutes (Acts 2:42; Romans 10:14), we are lead in a study of God’s word. Sermons cover a variety of Bible-based topics. Keith Olbrigcht is our preaching minister, though occasionally a guest speaker will be invited to speak. Each lesson is designed to be both instructive and relevant to our lives.
Giving: Each member of this congregation contributes weekly to the work of the church (1 Corinthians 16:2). We do not ask or expect our visitors to give anything in the church’s offering.
We offer two Bible study periods each week: Sunday morning and Wednesday evening.
Sunday Morning Bible Study
On Sunday morning, classes for all age groups begin at 10:00 a.m. and last about 35 minutes. We will then break for an intermission before our regular worship service at 11:00 a.m.
Wednesday Evening Bible Study
Our Wednesday evening service begins at 7:00 p.m. with Bible classes for all ages. Children are taught age-appropriate classes by teachers who have a prepared an exciting Bible lesson. An adult class is also provided.
The Bible classes last about 40 minutes. After class, we all come to the main auditorium for a brief devotional lasting about 5-10 minutes. We offer an invitation for anyone to respond for prayers or to obey the gospel. We conclude with a few announcements to the church, which includes upcoming events and prayer requests for various needs.
In all of our classes you can expect to open the Bible so we can all study and grow in our faith. During these times we also encourage one another (Hebrews 10:24-25) and help one another to maintain our Christian lights (Matthew 5:16) to shine for others during our work week.
The Bible is the Word of God
The Paintsville church of Christ has a wholesome respect for the inspired word of God. The Bible is the sole and complete authority for what we believe and practice. Because the Paintsville church of Christ accepts the Word of God as the all-sufficient rule of faith and practice, we reject all human creeds (Galatians 1:8-9; Revelation 22:18-19).
